Stoneware Bowls by Elaine Carhartt
Stoneware Bowls by Elaine Carhartt

Unique, one-of-a-kind stoneware bowls by Elaine Carhartt. These low fired bowls are made by rolling a thin slab of clay, cutting out a circle, then placing it on a convex form to dry. After a bisque firing, colored engobes are used to paint the design. Liquid wax is applied to protect the colors of the pattern from the black stain that is then painted over the entire surface. Every place that has no wax is now stained black and after the second firing (where the wax is burned off) the colors show through. A third firing glazes the piece.
