Offramp Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition, Echiko Ohira: Red from October 26 – November 23, 2014. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Sunday, October 26 from 2-5pm. There will be a closing reception and artist’s talk on Sunday, November 23 from 2-5pm.
The large scale paper sculptures in Echiko Ohira: Red take their cue from the natural world. Myriad layers of ordinary Kraft paper are torn, wound, stacked, scrunched, stained and painted resulting in shapes echoing birds’ nests, sea urchins, torsos and flowers. Most are sprayed or painted vivid cadmium red. Others are stained brownish off-white with tea, providing calm, contrast and respite to the emotionally charged red.
Other, smaller works are formed from paper plates, and like the larger pieces, skillfully manipulated into red-rose-like flower forms in full bloom. Twisted wires and brassy screws emanate from the flowers, their shiny metallic surfaces adding an otherworldly, exotic aspect to them.
Echiko Ohira: Red is Ohira’s first solo exhibition at Offramp Gallery. Originally from Japan, Ohira lives and works in the Los Angeles area. Echiko Ohira: Red will be shown concurrently with Quinton Bemiller: Recent Work.
