Offramp Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition, D. Jean Hester: A Rope Let Down From Heaven from May 6 - June 3, 2012. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Sunday, May 6 from 2-5pm. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, June 3 from 2-5pm.
Inspired by a dead eucalyptus tree in the courtyard of the gallery, "A Rope Let Down From Heaven" is a year-long project in four parts which coincides with the seasons. Though now dead, this tree simultaneously embodies beginnings, middles, ends, the entire range of seasons, the memories and experiences of a lifetime. The project uses the tree as a catalyst to consider how memory is, as Marcel Proust wrote, "a rope let down from heaven to rescue us from the abyss of nonbeing."
Presented in the spring, the first part of the project is an outdoor site-specific installation titled "I Just Know Something Good Is Going To Happen (Like The Sun Coming Out)". The installation focuses on the tree itself, exploring beginnings, optimism, bright and shining hope. Wire, paillettes of gold and copper, and recreated branches combine to reanimate the dead tree, reaching up into its branches and down the trunk to its roots. The tree shimmers and glows in the breeze and shifting light.
Additional segments of the project will be presented in the coming seasons.
