Offramp Gallery Newsletter March 2009

It's a little crazy here this week, installing three exhibitions and dealing with all the attendant details. We're very excited about the shows and hope everyone can make it to the opening on Sunday, March 8 from 2-5pm. The orange tree on the patio is blooming and the smell is intoxicating! As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Offramp Gallery presents a solo show of works by Los Angeles area artist, Carlo Marcucci, from March 8 - April 19, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, March 8, from 2-5pm.

Carlo's minimal, geometric, wall-mounted sculptures are crafted from wood and then then exquisitely skinned with everyday objects that you would not expect in a gallery setting. Dried pasta (spaghetti, udon noodles, mugwort soba and even Spaghettios!), staples, and mechanical pencil refills are among the objects that texture and color the works in a surprisingly beautiful way.

Many of the works in this show are from Marcucci's well-known Wheatfields series, of which he says: “With this body of work I use a common edible item, such as spaghetti, to challenge the viewer’s preconceived notions about food – by transforming its characteristics and its use.”

Offramp Gallery presents Susan Sironi: Altered Books, a solo show of works by the Los Angeles area artist, from March 8 - April 19, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, March 8, from 2-5pm.

Susan starts with ordinary books and transforms them by carefully cutting through the layers of images and text to create very personalized, one-of-a-kind artist's books. The resulting objects fascinate by their complexity, architecture and depth. The five altered books that comprise her "Flower Arrangement Books" series, all start from the same illustrated book on flower arranging. One becomes a three-dimensional pastel quilt, while another becomes a fantastical 3-D paper flower arrangement.

Offramp Gallery is pleased to present Joyce Dallal: Wave, the reprise of a 2007 site-specific installation to be installed in the library, from March 8 - April 19, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, March 8, from 2-5pm.

Dallal says of Wave: "This large paper sculpture backs into a corner and forms a wave-like shape flowing from the top of a wall to the floor. It is printed with excerpts from newspaper articles about refugees fleeing the violence of the Iraq war, and is a play on commonly used journalistic terms regarding war such as 'wave of violence, wave of bombings, wave of refugees.'"

Joyce has recently returned from New York City where her installation, Descent, is part of a two-person exhibition, “Flight”, an exhibit of sculptural installations on the theme of war and peace and its human consequences and implications, at the United Nation's Visitor Gallery.

Offramp Gallery is pleased to announce Quinton Bemiller: Choice and Chance, a solo show of new paintings and works on paper, from May 10 - June 21, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 10, from 2-5pm.

Quinton's brightly colored paintings are both abstract and narrative, often suggesting surreal landscapes. He refers to them as fictional spaces, open to interpretation: "My engagement with the work parallels my life: issues of the moment fade away as more immediate situations develop; calculated decisions, intuition and randomness all play a part; the ending is like a quiet pause on the way to something else." The black and white works on paper evoke a similar but more haunting world of shadow and light.

Quinton Bemiller is a Los Angeles based painter. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Arena 1, Santa Monica, CA and Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, CA. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Armory Center for the Arts and Claremont Graduate University, where he completed his MFA in 2007. Quinton Bemiller also studied at The Art Institute of Boston (BFA 2000) and Pasadena City College (AA 1998). He is on the faculty of Chaffey College, Rancho Cucamonga, CA and is the facilitator of numerous classes and workshops for Los Angeles artists and collectors. Along with Chuck Feesago, Quinton Bemiller coordinates Project_210, an artist-run exhibition space in Pasadena, CA.
