April 2009
|
|
Spring has sprung, and with the help of gallery preparator Lonny Sotelo, and resident goddaughter, Maya Brooks, Offramp's vegetable garden is planted. Maya and I suffered sun stroke from our efforts yesterday, whereas Lonny, who did all the heavy work with a pick axe, did not. If all goes well, you'll hear me bragging about my tomatoes in a couple of months . . . As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Upcoming Quinton Bemiller: Choice and Chance May 10 - June 21, 2009

Quinton Bemiller The Aftermath, 2007 acrylic on canvas over panel 84" x 96"
|
Offramp Gallery is pleased to announce Quinton Bemiller: Choice and Chance, a solo show of new paintings and works on paper, from May 10 - June 21, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 10, from 2-5pm.
Quinton's brightly colored paintings are both abstract and narrative, often suggesting surreal landscapes. He refers to them as fictional spaces, open to interpretation: "My engagement with the work parallels my life: issues of the moment fade away as more immediate situations develop; calculated decisions, intuition and randomness all play a part; the ending is like a quiet pause on the way to something else." The black and white works on paper evoke a similar but more haunted world of shadow and light.

In her artist's statement, Megann says, "My books reference various book forms, like accordion or carousel books but ultimately they are paper sculptures. They begin with a simple shape and material. Then, using repetition, the books grow and take on their final form."

Closing April 19 Carlo Marcucci

Carlo Marcucci WHEATFIELDS LXIV (# 64), 2007 Udon noodles, squid ink spaghetti and porcini mushroom on wood 32" x 12" x 3.5"
|
Offramp Gallery's solo exhibition of works by Los Angeles area artist, Carlo Marcucci will be on view through April 19, 2009. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, April 19, from 2-5pm.
Carlo's minimal, geometric, wall-mounted sculptures are crafted from wood and then then exquisitely skinned with everyday objects that you would not expect in a gallery setting. Dried pasta (spaghetti, udon noodles, mugwort soba and even Spaghettios!), staples, and mechanical pencil refills are among the objects that texture and color the works in a surprisingly beautiful way.
Many of the works in this show are from Marcucci's well-known Wheatfields series, of which he says: “With this body of work I use a common edible item, such as spaghetti, to challenge the viewer’s preconceived notions about food – by transforming its characteristics and its use.”

Closing April 19 Susan Sironi: Altered Books
|
|
|
Susan Sironi Puzzle, 2008 altered book 14" x 11" x 2" (with plexi box)
|
Offramp Gallery's solo exhibition, Susan Sironi: Altered Books, will be on view through April 19, 2009. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, April 19, from 2-5pm.
Susan starts with ordinary books and transforms them by carefully cutting through the layers of images and text to create very personalized, one-of-a-kind artist's books. The resulting objects fascinate by their complexity, architecture and depth. The five altered books that comprise her "Flower Arrangement Books" series, all start from the same illustrated book on flower arranging. One becomes a three-dimensional pastel quilt, while another becomes a fantastical 3-D paper flower arrangement.

Closing April 19 Joyce Dallal: Wave

Installation snapshot of Joyce Dallal's Wave, backlit by the library windows.
|
Offramp Gallery's solo exhibition, Joyce Dallal: Wave, will be on view through April 19, 2009. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, April 19, from 2-5pm.
Dramatically backlit by Offramp's library windows, this large paper sculpture seems to flow out of an overhead storage space down to the floor. Dallal says "[Wave] is printed with excerpts from newspaper articles about refugees fleeing the violence of the Iraq war, and is a play on commonly used journalistic terms regarding war such as 'wave of violence, wave of bombings, wave of refugees.'"

Speaking of LA Artcore, we were honored to have a visit from Executive Director, Lydia Takeshita, and several board members last week.
We also had a wonderful visit from Jane Stott and 45 members of the Pasadena Arts League, who were on a contemporary art tour of Pasadena. They also visited Project 210, HAUS, and the Armory Center for the Arts.
