Offramp Gallery Newsletter May 2009

Chaz and I just returned from three days in San Francisco, where Chaz attended the annual AIA conference at the Moscone Center, leaving me free to look up old friends and roam the streets. My fun was cut short by a case of 24-hour stomach flu, but fortunately, not before I was able to see the William Kentridge: Five Themes exhibition at SFMOMA. It is fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to SF (hurry, it closes May 31) . . . As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Offramp Gallery is pleased to announce Quinton Bemiller: Poles, a site-specific installation in the garden, in conjunction with Quinton Bemiller: Chance and Choice, from May 10 - June 21, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 10, from 2-5pm.

In Poles, Quinton adresses his interest in color and color relationships. He will be installing a meandering line of painted pvc pipes in the garden, informally spaced and referencing the colors found there. Of Poles, Quinton states:

In nature, colors modulate and change over time. There are surprising connections to be found. Each environment seems to have a particular color palette of its own, be it in a canyon or in a backyard. . . From one pole to the next, each color changes gradually in a progression of color. This is something I often do in my paintings. Here, one can walk alongside the poles, experiencing the color modulations in real time while observing their interaction with the immediate environment.

Offramp Gallery presents Quinton Bemiller: Choice and Chance, a solo show of new paintings and works on paper, from May 10 - June 21, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 10, from 2-5pm.

Quinton's brightly colored paintings are both abstract and narrative, often suggesting surreal landscapes. He refers to them as fictional spaces, open to interpretation: "My engagement with the work parallels my life: issues of the moment fade away as more immediate situations develop; calculated decisions, intuition and randomness all play a part; the ending is like a quiet pause on the way to something else." The black and white works on paper evoke a similar but more haunted world of shadow and light.

Offramp Gallery presents Megann Zwierlein, a solo show of one-of-a-kind artists books, from May 10 - June 21, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 10, from 2-5pm.

In her artist's statement, Megann says, "My books reference various book forms, like accordion or carousel books but ultimately they are paper sculptures. They begin with a simple shape and material. Then, using repetition, the books grow and take on their final form."

Megann's colorful and playful books will be on display in the library and living room.

Notes (& Gossip)

Congratulations are once again in order for Rick Araluce for receiving an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant. You may recall that Rick was also awarded a Pollock-Krasner grant in late 2008.

You may have noticed that there is suddenly a lot of contemporary art happening in Pasadena. Bill Rabe, co-director of Haus, with input from Project 210 and Offramp, has put together this map (at right) to make it easier to plan your Pasadena art visits.
