Announcing Elaine Carhartt: Prints May 23 - June 20, 2010
|
|
Elaine Carhartt, Market Day, 2008-09, hand printed, individually watercolored lino cut, 12" x 16"
|
Offramp Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of hand-watercolored lino prints by LA-area artist Elaine Carhartt from May 23 - June 20, 2010. The opening reception will be held Sunday, May 23 from 2-5pm.
Books, especially illulminated manuscripts, are the inspiration for Carhartt's prints. Carhartt translates her fascination with the architecture and costumes of the figures in the small illustrations, creating her own scenes of everyday life -- as it might have been in the middle ages while also reflecting our lives today. Bold pattern, themes from nature, and a bright palette bring Carhartt's figures to life as they perform everyday tasks.
Each print is available in an edition of 10, all hand-watercolored by the artist.

Continuing at Offramp Gallery through May 9, 2010 is Chuck Feesago: kavajava. An artist's talk will be held on Saturday, May 8 at 3pm.
Feesago says of the exhibition, "The rituals of the Pacific Islands swirl together with those of the U.S., fostering my perspective of thought and comprehension.
"The bowl, as object, for me represents the rituals of each culture simultaneously reflecting similarities and differences - inclusions and omissions. The reflections parallel my actions as an artist.
"I want to share the intimate moment of ritual consumption. The coming together of past-present-future, the freedom that comes from repetition, and the realization that the uneventful evokes the landscape of possibility."

Stanton Hunter, Un-tidaled, installation shot
|
Continuing at Offramp Gallery through May 9 is Stanton Hunter: Un-tidaled. An artist's talk will be held on Saturday, May 8 at 3pm.
Hunter says of the exhibition:
"Whenever I return to work with decomposed earth, something organic often results, referencing ground, sky, water. Because of the nature of the material and its traditions, multiples, additive processes, and obsession predominate. Singular elements start to suggest forms and forms begin to suggest installations, and one never knows where things will end up, or if they’ll be anything at all."

Notes (& Gossip)

New Offramp residents, Coco & Bella.
|
As some of you already know, we recently added two new members to our family here at Offramp: Bella & Coco, the cutest kittens in the world! It has been a challenge keeping them, and long time canine resident Duncan, out of the gallery and away from Chuck Feesago's beautiful paper & string creations!
The always busy, always interesting, Mark Steven Greenfield, recently travelled to Thailand where his work was included in two shows: the 4th International Thai-American Exchange Exhibition at the Thailand Cultural Center in Bangkok, and the 6th International Art Workshop in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
In his spare time, Mark is curating the 2010 COLA Individual Artist Fellowship Exhibition at the Municipal Art Gallery, which opens on May 23rd, as well as an exhibition at the Los Angeles International Airport called Altimetry, which opens on May 28th and continues through August 28 in Terminal 1.
An interesting new contemporary art venue recently opened in Pasadena, Elements Kitchen Art Gallery. Before you go jumping to conclusions about art and restaurants, this is a bona fide contemporary gallery, run by artists Karen Sikie and Gwen Samuels. The current exhibition is Anita Bunn: Never Twice the Same. The reception is on Sunday, May 23, 2-5pm (coinciding with Offramp's opening of Elaine Carhartt: Prints). Oh, and the food is awesome! Congratulations to Chef Onil for his recent rave review in the LA Times.
Anita is also busy with two upcoming shows: one at House Gallery, Salt Lake City (we were pleased when House's director, Julie Dunker stopped by Offramp on a recent trip to LA); the other is Altimetry, the aforementioned group show curated by Mark Steven Greenfield, which will be on view at LAX Terminal One from the end of May through the end of August.
