July 2009

It's controlled chaos here getting ready for the July 12 opening of Mark Steven Greenfield: Othello's Ghost. Besides the usual frantic pace of installation, major landscaping is going on around the house and our preparator broke his ankle. You can read all about it in the articles below . . . As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Los Angeles based artist, Francesco Siqueiros, is creating a site-specific installation, Paraiso Terrenal/Earthly Paradise, in the garden at Offramp Gallery. The installation will represent the sacred and the profane as it relates to work, production, and creativity. The project is ongoing through the summer and fall of 2009, culminating with a reception on Sunday, October 25, 2009, from 2-5pm.
The installation consists of two separate parts: “Garden as Subject” and “Garden as Object.” “Garden as Subject” involves the construction of a garden surrounded by an architectonic structure. The structure will hold screens for projections of stills and video. The garden itself is an approximately 6’ x 12' plot that has been cut out of the cement surface of an old patio.
“Garden as Object” involves the construction of a garden interfacing and interrelating in a multimedia composition. The size of the garden will be approximately 6’ x 12.' The garden is viewed as an armature or canvas upon which various relationships are instigated, including color and forms of the plants and vegetables in their surrounding area.

Opening July 12 Mark Steven Greenfield: Othello's Ghost July 12 - August 23, 2009

Offramp Gallery is pleased to present Othello's Ghost, a solo exhibition of works by Mark Steven Greenfield, from July 12 - August 23, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday, July 12 from 2-5pm.
African American artist Mark Steven Greenfield is both fascinated and repelled by images of Blackface Minstrelsy, the predominant form of American stage entertainment for more than a hundred years. Greenfield appropriates the images of white entertainers in blackface, strips them from their original context, in some instances superimposing text, to create works that are contemporary in aesthetic and provocative in content.
The exhibition is comprised of works from previous series of Greenfield's as well as new work. The show's title, Othello's Ghost, refers to one of the earliest known uses of changing skin color for theater, Shakespeare's Othello. In his artist's statement about Othello's Ghost, Greenfield writes, "in my most recent work I’m examining the effect these images have had on the collective subconscious of the American psyche. The most obvious stereotypical caricatures in this exhibition exist on the conscious level and serve as a starting point for this exploration."
Exhibition co-curated by Jane Chafin and Anita Bunn.

As those of you who attended the closing reception for Quinton Bemiller and Megann Zwieirlein already know, major landscaping is going on in the patio and garden areas at Offramp. We are very excited and hope to have it all finished by the July 12 opening reception. Pictured at right, center, is garden goddess Sara Wilson, of Sara Wilson Garden Design, who is masterminding the project. The new plantings will all be drought resistant, and the hardscape will be a water permeable layer of California gold gravel tamped to make a firm walking surface.

Extended through August 23 Quinton Bemiller: Poles
|

Quinton Bemiller: Poles, a site-specific installation in the garden, has been extended through August 23. In Poles, Quinton adresses his interest in color and color relationships. He has installed a meandering line of painted pvc pipes in the garden, informally spaced and referencing the colors found there. Of Poles, Quinton states:
"In nature, colors modulate and change over time. There are surprising connections to be found. Each environment seems to have a particular color palette of its own, be it in a canyon or in a backyard. . . From one pole to the next, each color changes gradually in a progression of color. This is something I often do in my paintings. Here, one can walk alongside the poles, experiencing the color modulations in real time while observing their interaction with the immediate environment."

Notes (& Gossip)

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Offramp's preparator, Lonny Sotelo (pictured at right, center), who suffered a compound fracture of his ankle a couple of weeks ago. He's in a cast, on crutches and on the mend. He'll be sitting out the current installation, but hopefully will be back 100% by the fall.
I was honored to be asked to sit on a Gallery Roundtable at Gallery 825 as part of Los Angeles Art Association's ArtSpeak series. Fellow panelists included Elizabeth East, director of L.A. Louver, Stephen Cohen, director of Stephen Cohen Gallery, and Kenzie Alexander, director of Cella Gallery. I recognized several artists in the audience including Gwen Samuels, Cheryl Walker, Laura Larson and Carl Burmeister.
