Offramp Gallery Newsletter August 2009

Summer is in full force -- the figs are beginning to ripen and we're happily up to our ears in heirloom tomatoes! Work on the re-landscaping is almost complete. We find ourselves spending a lot of time outside just watching the plants grow. Life is good . . . As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Offramp Gallery is pleased to present a very special exhibition, Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits, from September 13 – October 25, 2009, with an opening reception for the artist on Sunday, September 13, 2-5pm.

Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits is comprised of over 100 self portraits, covering a time span from the mid-1950’s to the present. Presented in loosely chronological order, the work follows Los Angeles-based Goldberg from a young man doing formal oil paintings, through his artistic peak and deep disaffection with the contemporary art world in the 1980’s, to the present, where he continues to work, even though he has suffered a neurological trauma that has dramatically impaired his memory and left him unable to read.

Goldberg graduated from UCLA with a BA in art in 1959. He showed his work at the Ceeje Gallery until it closed in 1970. He continued to work as an artist, ultimately going back to UCLA where he earned his MFA in photography in 1977. He made a meager living teaching, writing, doing lighting design for performing arts and photography for artists and galleries. For many years he hosted a Sunday night figure drawing group for students and like-minded artists.

In conjunction with the exhibition and Offramp Gallery, Media For a Better Planet is producing an eponymous documentary. Media for a Better Planet is a new production company formed to create socially-conscious films and documentaries. Filming is ongoing and footage will be shown at Mr. Goldberg's opening at Offramp Gallery on Sunday, September 13th, 2009.

Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits is co-curated by Offramp Gallery director, Jane Chafin and artist, Nicholette Kominos.

Ongoing at Offramp Gallery is Othello's Ghost, a solo exhibition of works by Mark Steven Greenfield, with a closing reception on August 23, 2-5pm. African American artist Mark Steven Greenfield is both fascinated and repelled by images of Blackface Minstrelsy, the predominant form of American stage entertainment for more than a hundred years. Greenfield appropriates the images of white entertainers in blackface, strips them from their original context, in some instances superimposing text, to create works that are contemporary in aesthetic and provocative in content.

The exhibition is comprised of works from previous series of Greenfield's as well as new work. The show's title, Othello's Ghost, refers to one of the earliest known uses of changing skin color for theater, Shakespeare's Othello. In his artist's statement about Othello's Ghost, Greenfield writes, "in my most recent work I’m examining the effect these images have had on the collective subconscious of the American psyche. The most obvious stereotypical caricatures in this exhibition exist on the conscious level and serve as a starting point for this exploration."

Exhibition co-curated by Offramp Gallery director, Jane Chafin and photographer, Anita Bunn.

Quinton Bemiller: Poles, a site-specific installation in the garden, has been extended through August 23. In Poles, Quinton adresses his interest in color and color relationships. He has installed a meandering line of painted pvc pipes in the garden, informally spaced and referencing the colors found there. Of Poles, Quinton states:

"In nature, colors modulate and change over time. There are surprising connections to be found. Each environment seems to have a particular color palette of its own, be it in a canyon or in a backyard. . . From one pole to the next, each color changes gradually in a progression of color. This is something I often do in my paintings. Here, one can walk alongside the poles, experiencing the color modulations in real time while observing their interaction with the immediate environment."
