Offramp Gallery Newsletter September 2009

Chaz and I were recently treated to a free concert of abstract music by the Philabosians at the Folly Bowl in Altadena -- a magical place if ever there was one! This beautiful, private, outdoor amphitheater is the love child of painters Susanna Dadd and James Griffith. This year's season is over, but be sure to check it out next year. . . As always, you can contact me by clicking on the "Reply to the sender" link above or by e-mailing me directly at jane@offrampgallery.com. -- Jane Chafin, Director

Continuing through October 25, 2009 at Offramp Gallery is Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, October 25, from 2-5pm.

Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits features over 80 self portraits, covering a time span from the mid-1950’s to the present. Presented in loosely chronological order, the work follows Los Angeles-based Goldberg from a young man doing formal oil paintings, through his artistic peak and deep disaffection with the contemporary art world in the 1980’s, to the slow decline of the last few years due to illness and aging.

Goldberg graduated from UCLA with a BA in art in 1959. He showed his work at the Ceeje Gallery until it closed in 1970. He continued to work as an artist, ultimately going back to UCLA where he earned his MFA in photography in 1977. He made a meager living teaching, writing, doing lighting design for performing arts and photography for artists and galleries. For many years he hosted a Sunday night figure drawing group for students and like-minded artists.

In conjunction with the exhibition and Offramp Gallery, Media For a Better Planet is producing an eponymous documentary. Media for a Better Planet is a new production company formed to create socially-conscious films and documentaries. Filming is ongoing.

Aron Goldberg: A Life in Self Portraits is co-curated by Offramp Gallery director, Jane Chafin and artist, Nicholette Kominos.

Congratulations to Quinton Bemiller, who was recently awarded an individual artist's grant from the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission. Quinton will be painting a mural at the Armory Center for the Arts interpreting the natural environment of Pasadena's Hahamongna Watershed Park. If you missed the review of Quinton's Offramp exhibition in the September issue of THE Magazine, click here to read it.

Speaking of the Armory, Chaz and I had a good time at the opening reception of Installations Inside/Out: 20th Anniversary Exhibition, where we chatted with Jay Belloli, Betye Saar, Peggy Phelps, Bill Bush and Mark Steven Greenfield, among others. If you haven't already seen the exhibition, go! It's a wonderful show.
