Megann Zwierlein: Artist's Books
May 10 - June 21, 2009

Artist's Statement

My books reference various book forms, like accordion or carousel books but ultimately they are paper sculptures. They begin with a simple shape and material. Then, using repetition, the books grow and take on their final form. The books are not planned out but evolve from my intuitive process. I respond to discoveries while making the books and sometimes the final form is unexpected. The materials I use -- Oragami papers and packaging matreials -- reference both the art of Oragami paper folding but also consumerism to a degree. I like to use accessible materials that are around me, especially ordinary materials that can be transformed into something surprising.
